The Green Business National Network (GBNN) is a consortium of unique local, statewide, and national green business programs from across the United States. As a vital part of the broader sustainability movement, GBNN believes that significant benefits emerge when organizations collaborate, support one another, and regularly convene to share knowledge.

GBNN’s mission is to facilitate relationship-building and information sharing among green and sustainable business programs across the country. By promoting collaboration and elevating effective practices, we aim to advance the national interests of these locally-focused programs and support their sustained growth.

We envision a future where coordinated networking, shared knowledge, and strategic collaboration strengthen existing green business programs and inspire the development of new initiatives nationwide. GBNN operates with national thinking and collaboration while honoring local action and program uniqueness.

History & Growth

GBNN was born from dialogue at the first National Summit on Green Business Engagement Programs, held in Boston on May 9-10, 2013. This landmark event brought over forty leaders from across the country, creating a forum to share successes, challenges, and approaches for engaging businesses, partnering with governments and utilities, and delivering effective program services.

Following the Summit’s success, a leadership group formed to define GBNN’s mission, objectives, and activities, aiming to foster best practice sharing and networking. GBNN launched a series of six national webinars covering key topics such as launching, financing, marketing, and growing green business programs.

By late 2015, the leadership team pursued formalizing GBNN’s structure and crafting a strategic growth plan.

GBNN developed a new strategic plan in 2022 that focused on developing its programs and initiatives, partnerships and collaborations, and funding. Today, GBNN serves as the primary engine for small, sustainable business innovation, scaling its national network to empower local programs from coast to coast.
